Best credit card for Amazon in 2026
Amazon is one of the few places where the store-branded card is also the best card. That is unusual. Most store cards pay well at the store and badly everywhere else, and the Prime Visa does both of those things. The trick is using it for exactly one job.
The example basket
- Amazon.com: $200/month ($2,400/yr)
- Whole Foods: $100/month ($1,200/yr)
- Prime membership treated as something you already have for shipping, not a cost of the card
| Card | Annual fee | Amazon / Whole Foods | Back on $3,600 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prime Visa, with Prime | $0 | 5% / 5% | $180 |
| Prime Visa, without Prime | $0 | 3% / 3% | $108 |
| Amex Blue Cash Everyday | $0 | 3% online retail / 3% supermarkets | $108 |
| BofA Customized Cash | $0 | 3% online shopping / 2% grocery | $96 |
| Flat 2% card | $0 | 2% / 2% | $72 |
| Capital One Savor | $0 | 1% / 3% | $60 |
The BofA Customized Cash pays 6% in your choice category for the first year, which lifts it to $168 here in year one, then $96 after. The Blue Cash Everyday's 3% stops at $6,000 a year in each category, well above this basket.
How the Prime Visa earns everywhere else
- 5% at Amazon.com, Audible, Whole Foods Market and Chase Travel, with Prime
- 3% at the same places without Prime
- 2% at restaurants, gas stations and local transit, including commuting
- 1% on everything else
- No annual fee, and new cardmembers currently get a $150 Amazon gift card on approval
Two percent at restaurants and gas is below what a dedicated dining card or a 3% gas card pays. The Prime Visa is a single-purpose card. Pair it with a flat 2% card for everything else and you have a strong two-card setup for an Amazon-heavy household.
October is when this matters most
Prime Big Deal Days runs October 6 and 7, 2026. Amazon has also been running extra rewards for Prime Visa holders on select brands and categories from mid-September through October 6. Holiday shopping follows right after.
For most households, October through December is the heaviest Amazon quarter of the year. If $300 a month is your normal run rate, the holiday quarter can easily be double that. That is $90 at 5% over three months, against $36 on a flat 2% card.
Who should get the Prime Visa
Right pick if you already pay for Prime and spend more than about $100 a month combined at Amazon and Whole Foods. It costs nothing to hold and pays the highest rate available at the store you shop most.
Not the right pick if you do not have Prime and do not plan to. At 3%, the Amex Blue Cash Everyday matches it at Amazon, matches it at all U.S. supermarkets instead of only Whole Foods, and adds 3% at U.S. gas stations.
Skip both if your Amazon spend is under $50 a month. The extra 3% is $18 a year, which is not worth a new account.
The points-at-checkout problem
Amazon will happily let you pay with points from Chase, Amex and other programs. The rate is the issue. Chase and Amex points used this way typically return less than a cent each, below the penny you would get from a plain statement credit. Amex Membership Rewards points are often worth more than that transferred to airlines.
The exception is the Prime Visa's own rewards, which are worth full value at Amazon checkout.
If you want to spend points at Amazon, cash them out first, then buy with your Prime Visa and earn 5% on top. Our Chase points guide shows what the same points can do through other exits.
What to check before applying
Figures reflect published terms as of October 2026. Amazon's promotional rewards change often, and the Prime requirement is the condition people forget. Verify the current rates and welcome offer with Chase before applying, and confirm your Prime membership is the eligible kind on the account you will link.
Questions people actually ask
Not financial advice. Rates, caps and fees change, verify with the issuer before applying. BetterRewards earns nothing from card sign-ups and uses no affiliate links.
